History of Fat-Grafting

The process of transferring fat tissue to a different region to augment and correct soft tissue defects (Fat-Grafting) has been used since the late 1800’s. The use of patient’ abdominal fat to fill in the cheek (malar) and chin areas has been reported as far back as 1909. However modern fat grafting procedures exploded since the 1980’s as liposuction became more popular. Due to the refinement of the technique through the decades, Fat Grafting has become the procedure of choice in correcting various problems including facial scarring, lip augmentation, and wrinkles and furrows.

As the technique gains popularity, various methods are continuously sought to ensure a viable, healthy and sustained graft. As adipose tissue is transferred from one body region to another, reabsorbtion and tissue loss occurs over time. This is due to the absence of support tissue which maintains the structural integrity of the grafts, as well as blood supply to the tissue which provide the necessary nutrients to ensure the survival thereof. Recent developments in regenerative medicine and stem cell biology however have offered a very efficient and natural solution…

The Stem Cell Facelift

Adipose-derived Stem Cells (isolated from fat tissue) have the ability to renew damaged tissue, revitalize organ function, and rejuvenate old cells. Depending on their environment, they have the ability to form various cell types from different tissue types such as cartilage, bone, fat, muscle and nervous tissue. At ReGenesis, through research and refinement, we have developed a technique that utilizes both the regenerative properties of stem cells and the volumising and hydrating effects of fat tissue to create a more youthfull, radiant appearance.

Cell-Enriched Autologous fat transfer or the “Stem Cell Facelift” is a procedure in which a patient’s own (autologous) body fat is used to fill sunken or thin regions of the face where volume loss is most evident. The procedure entails the removal of unwanted, excess fat from a different body region, enriching the fat with the patients’ own regenerative stem cells and finally, reinjection of the enriched fat into the specific areas of interest.

Applications often include:

  • Filling in forehead wrinkles and laugh lines
  • Filling sunken areas around the eyes
  • Cheek or chin augmentation
  • Smoothing lines in the face

The stem cells added to the fat tissue ensure that the graft is successfully maintained within the new environment and increases the survival rate of the fat cells. This is achieved through the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularisation) for the fat graft. The newly formed blood supply ensures that the vital nutrients reach the transferred tissue. The stem cells also contribute to tissue volume by forming new fats cells and support tissues such as fibroblasts and collagen.

Fat tissue is harvested from the tummy, thighs or back using local anesthetic while adhering to strict sterile conditions and technique. The harvesting procedure often takes between 45-60 minutes depending on the amount of fat that is removed

After the desired volume of fat has been extracted, it is processed and prepared in the ReGenesis cell biology laboratory, located on the premises. Processing of the tissue entails the extraction of stem cells and the removal of excess fluid and damaged fat cells. The fat that will be used as the graft is then enriched with the isolated stem cells and associated growth factors.

The stem cell enriched fat is drawn into small syringes which will enable transfer of the enriched fatty tissue to the site of interest using a small, blunt cannula. This allows for the injection of the enriched fat without harming the surrounding facial tissue or structures.

  • Procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with no incisions or stitches
  • Utilizes patient’s own fat and stem cells so there is almost no risk of graft rejection
  • Minimal risk of complications
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Natural looking results
  • Improved skin appearance and hydration
  • Regeneration and healing of surrounding tissue and structures
  • Improved blood supply to the area
  • Long lasting results
  • No foreign materials implanted, so there is no risk of allergic reactions
  • An overall renewed, revived and rejuvenated appearance
